carex: garden design by carolyn mullet

I design & build gardens and this blog is about all things landscape and garden that can influence garden making. My bias is toward the clean, straight forward, and spare but I can be seduced as much as anyone by the sensuality of nature. However, what I post will be about more than the pretty, precious, and nostalgic. We'll see how well I do. And "Carex"? It's a sedge frequently used in planting native gardens. I like it very much.

‘La Pietra Rossa’ in Solanas, Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. This is the personal garden of Maurizio Usai. He started it in 1997 wanting to have a garden that was different from the usual Italian resort model.

The story of the ongoing development of the garden is one of a passionate gardener and plant collector with a great eye for design.

The garden at the House of Four Winds in Lake Forest, Illinois, US. Designed in 1909 by architect Howard van Doren Shaw and landscape architect Rose Standish Nicols with the Generalife Gardens at the Alhambra in Spain as inspiration. The family that has owned the property since 1974 has restored the garden to the original plan.

A garden pond with square voids into which water flows silently. Pretty magical, I’d say. Designed by English garden designer, Andy Sturgeon, for the 2005 Chelsea Flower Show. The idea started with the Oak cubes. He won a well deserved gold metal. Photos by Helen Flickling.
