Let’s face it. Front foundations are a pain to do and the results frequently boring and trite. Here’s one that, though not innovative, has hit all the right notes, in my book. It’s taken it’s cue from the house, casual and asymmetrical. By using large shrubs at either end, the eye is drawn inward to where it should be: the front door. And how about that front walk? Lets hear from you. Do you think it fits?

What’s Blooming Now: Narcissus jonquilla var. henriquesii at the JC Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina.  By the way, this arboretum is a “must see” if you are ever in Raleigh.  A delight for any plant lover.

A Casual, Lush Garden.  ’Avalon’ is on the North Beaches near Sydney, Australia and was designed by the firm, Secret Gardens of Sydney. Love the sling chair. Furniture doesn’t have to be expensive.

Mown path in a prairie planting to focus attention. I don’t think we (garden designers here in the US) use this simple device often enough. Vase is Tivoli 45, finial, and plinth from Longshadow.

A Place to Gather: Ben Gurion Square, the entrance to Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Israel. Designed by Chyutin Architects. Strips of concrete alternate with concrete benches and vegetation (grass, Equisetophyta, and seasonal plants changed 3 times a year). Have you noticed that strips of whatever and Equisetum are now the darlings of Landscape Architects? (Think High Line.) Did Andrea Cochran start it all in her residential gardens? I love the look. Just wondering…
